ABOUT THE AREA


Campagnac is located just on the Lot and Dordogne border.  The Dordogne river is just 15 minutes drive, perfect for walking, cycling and kayaking and access to some designated most beautiful villages in France – Domme, La Roque Gageac, Sarla La Caneda and many more.  Access to middle aged castles of Beynac and Castelnaud La Chappelle – the area is absolutely full of history and very attractive to all – nature and history in perfect harmony.

Gourdon has a very medieval feel to it : a fortified gate, half-timbered houses, narrow lanes twisting up to the esplanade where once the castle stood… From the top of the hill, the gently undulating landscape reminds you of Perigord. All that remains of the castle and ramparts destroyed in the 17th C.  is the circle traced by the paths around the hilltop. The rue du Majou, the Maison du Sénéchal which houses exhibitions of craft products in summer, the 17th C. Town Hall, the church of Saint-Pierre, the Maison Cavaignac… all provide opportunities for exploring.

Here, everything is an invitation to take a stroll through the Middle Ages especially during the medieval festival when, in early August, the sounds of clashing swords and troubadours' songs resound in the streets.

Gourdon also offers the pleasure of walking around the jardins thématiques (themed gardens) in the mediaeval quarter of the town.

Nowadays, Gourdon, which became a sub-prefecture at the beginning of the 19th C., is the Lot's 3rd largest town and is designated « one of the most Beautiful Routes in France »..

On the market, Tuesday and Saturday mornings, you can find local products and specialities: truffles and foie gras, confits and breast of duck, lamb from the Causse, ceps, honey, chestnuts, walnut cake, goat cheeses (les cabécous), and, of course, Cahors Wine. 

Every summer on Thursday mornings, authentic, natural produce can also be found at the delicious Farmers' Market held on the Place St Pierre

Gourdon is just five minutes drive from Campagnac which itself has only residential properties set in rolling countryside.
