São João da Ribeira is an old Portuguese parish in the municipality of Rio Maior , with an area of 20.16 km² and 892 inhabitants (2011). Its population density was 44.2 inhab / km².

It was extinguished (aggregated) by the administrative reorganization of 2012/2013, its territory being integrated into the Union of Parishes of São João da Ribeira and Ribeira de São João. The former parish is crossed by the EN 114 that connects Rio Maior to Santarém.

It is assumed that the origins of São João da Ribeira, which the author was called "São João Baptista da Ribeira", date back to the time of the Christian Reconquest. It already existed in 1111, being at this time a place of significant importance, as evidenced by its Moorish Tower and Castro do Monte de São Gens.

The former owner of Quinta do Seabra was Dr. José Seabra da Silva, Minister and Assistant to the Marquis of Pombal, born in Vilela, where he was born on October 31, 1732 . For intrigues against him, he was exiled in 1771 and later imprisoned in the dungeons of the castle of São João da Foz, in Porto. Proclaimed D. Maria I, they transferred him to Rio de Janeiro and later to a prison in Angola. In 1788, in the time of D. João VI he returns to be Minister, but soon, due to new intrigues, he is again violently removed from all his public offices.

The religious services of this parish were dependent on the Convento dos Lóios, in Santarém, until 1834; then the rectory passed. In the administrative, S. João da Ribeira was important place that was once the seat of the municipality of Rio Maior. according to Decree of 3 of Janeiro of 1847, having previously belonged to the municipality of Santarém.

This Parish comprises the following places or couples: Cabeça Gorda, Fonte Nova, Casal das Figueiras, Casal do Pinheiro, Casal da Rompida, Casal do Laroujo, Laroujo, Casais da Lezíria, Louzela, São João da Ribeira, Vale de Barco, Alagoa and Arneiro.

Economic activities include agriculture, pastoralism, small trade, tomato processing industry. It is the second parish of the Municipality in importance in terms of wine, olive, and mill production.
