Property Information:

Mount Lodge, near the twin villages of Enniskeane and Ballineen in Co Cork, is described as having been built in 1850. Reputable sources suggest it may be lying about its age, though.

The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage insists it was built in 1820 and seems to expect no contradiction on the matter. It's also shown on the first-edition (1841) Ordnance Survey map as Enniskeen Cottage, acquiring its current name of Mount Lodge by the time the area was being surveyed for the second-edition OS map in 1901.

So it may be a little older than it's pretending to be. Allowances can be made though because, after all, who wouldn't like to be younger?

In any case it's wearing its years exceptionally well. It's been lovingly cared for down through the centuries, and has authentic features including a fan-lit front door, ceiling coving and some timber sash windows.

The NIAH describes Mount Lodge as "a handsome villa-style house" and remarks that, because of its single-storey over raised basement form, "it appears deceptively small scale".

That's certainly true. The delicate proportions of the house belie its actual floor area of more than 4,100 sq ft, in a mixture of old and new.

There are five bedrooms between the two floors - two at entrance level and three on the lower floor - and the living rooms are similarly spread out.

The basement has a family room opening into a kitchen and a conservatory (recently added), there's also a gym and a sauna on this floor.

Upstairs there's a living room and a dining room as well as a study and a large, 30ft-long playroom.

It's on 2 acres of carefully planned and tended gardens in the Bandon River valley, and it's about 40 minutes' drive form Cork airport.

About the Area:

The twin villages of Ballineen and Enniskeane  in County Cork in Ireland are 43 km (26.72 mi) southwest of Cork City, on the R586 road. Ballineen and Enniskean lie on the River Bandon between Bandon and Dunmanway and the fertile Bandon valley.

Ballineen belonged first to the Earls of Cork and later to the Earls of Bandon. Lord Bandon improved the village in the mid-19th century by introducing a revival that consisted of building a market house, a courthouse, a Weslyan Chapel, a Gothic Church and two schools in the area. Ballineen held monthly fairs on the streets until the mid-1960s. Enniskean takes its name from Cian Maol Muadh (later O'Mahony) a local chieftain and has a connection with Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland. Cian married Sábh Brian's daughter and resided at Castlelands, Enniskean.

The main employers of the villages are Grainger's Sawmills in Enniskean and Carbery Group's Cheese and Food Ingredients factory located approximately 2 km (1.24 mi) west of Ballineen on the R586 regional road. William Grainger employs many of the local parish in many of his national and international business ventures.
