Superb 4 Bedroom House in Allier France

Euroresales Property ID – 9824321

Property information:

This is a superb large four bedroom house situated on the edge of a beautiful deep wooded river gorge in Chantelle, (pop 1000), a mainly medieval town in Allier, Auvergne, France, with 20 stone towers.

As the property includes 4 bedrooms it would be suitable for at the least 4-5 people.

The property is located between the market towns of St. Pourcain and Gannat and within an hours journey of Moulins, Vichy or Clermont Ferrand ,the area is green and lush with woodlands, vineyards, and often rare plants and wildlife (nightingales, blue-winged bumblebees, humming-bee hawkmoths) .

There are ancient abbeys, volcanoes and gorges throughout this region of France, and it is close to smaller therefore less crowded skiing resorts .
Robert Louis Stevenson - 'Travels on a Donkey' was written in this region.

This was once the town house of the Companions of the Tour de France, a guild of touring craft apprentices, who learned their skills from master craftsmen.

The house retains many interesting features including a volcanic stone paved floor in the dining room and kitchen, large rooms with high ceilings, a unique period stairwell leading to a massive oak beamed attic, a barrel roofed cellar, interesting details of a medieval granite sink, wall storage, and oak or chestnut floors throughout.
The roof was recently rebuilt and tiled in traditional clay tiles.

The garden with outbuildings, is long and has interesting medieval stonework. It overlooks the wooded gorge (easy access down the adjacent track) and faces an ancient chateau (now Abbey) that sits on a promontory over the river.

The town has all basic facilities – two schools, doctors, dentist, post office, banks, grocers, bakers and butchers.
The property could be used either as a permanent residence or as a holiday home.

About the area:

Chantelle is a commune in the Allier department in central France.

Allier; is a French department located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of central France named after the river Allier.

A transition zone in the middle of the country, Allier is actually a free zone between north and south. The department is wide open to Atlantic influences and it enjoys a mild and humid climate dominated by westerly winds which helps a little to differentiate it from other parts of Auvergne.

The weather variances coincide with the diversity of Bourbonnais territory such as: flat regions, low altitude Bourbonnais Sologne and large floodplains, the hill country, the average altitude of 300 to 600 metres, the central part of the department, and the semi-mountainous southern townships bordering the Combraille and Forez between 700 and 1,200 metres.
