About Sao Miguel

Sao Miguel (nicknamed 'the green island') is the biggest of the nine Azorean islands - an autonomous region of Portugal, situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Around 1000 kilometres off the coast of mainland Portugal the island is served (during non-COVID) times with regular (some daily, some weekly) flights between the island's international airport and London, New York, Boston, Toronto and some of the European mainland airports. The flight is four hours from London and more or less five hours from the various airports on the east coast of North America

The landscape is said to be reminiscent of Hawai, with spectacular green mountains, lake filled caldeiras, lakes and green pastures. The roads are lined with different flowers for different seasons, giving the impression of a huge garden. It has many sand beaches including Ribeira Grande, known for good surfing and hang gliding. The island is a hiker's dream with many walking trails and for the adventurer, spelunking, snorkelling, deep sea diving are all available. Hot springs, sweet corn cooked in the boiling waters of Furnas' pools or a mix of meat and vegetables cooked in the deep pits of Furnas' heated earth makes the island unique.

With its all-year round temperate climate (14 - 28 deg C), Sao Miguel boasts the only commercial tea growing plantations in Europe. It has a large dairy farming industry as well as crops of potatoes, various types of melons and other fruit.

The urban infrastructure is excellent, with good road systems and retail centres. There is a daily farmer's market in the main town of Ponta Delgada and a weekly market selling fruit, vegetables, cheese and even livestock in the second town of Ribeira Grande. The islanders are served by an excellent hospital and peripheral health centres, a university (which runs three-week summer schools in Basic Portuguese for foreigners, and geology during which students go on field trips to study the magnificent landscapes found on Sao Miguel and its neighbouring island of Santa Maria). Students of the summer schools tend to come from North America and all ages are represented.

Like all foreign residents of Portugal, one may benefit from the NHR regime whereby the newcomer to Sao Miguel pays a flat rate of 10% on foreign income for ten years. (Applicant to be on the NHR regime is best done while still living overseas or shortly after taking up residence in Portugal).

The people of Sao Miguel are sociable. Most of them in the towns speak English and there is a large community of foreigners from Canada, the States and Germany. Throughout summer there are several parades, festas, free outdoor music concerts (Fado and classical music), all providing colour and lively company. There is an abundance of musical talent on the island with all the schools teaching musical instruments and there is a large music academy in Ponta Delgada with teachers from all over the world. The performances put on by the two theatres in Ponta Delgada feature international conductors and soloists, performing alongside the local choirs and orchestras. These heavily subsidised performances (costing between 5 - 15 euros each) are world class.
